How to get sponsored on Instagram, you ask? Let’s start with what I do and my story.

The Story on How I Landed Paid Instagram Brand Deals

In 2018 alone, I traveled to Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Peru, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Utah, Alaska, Canada, the East Coast of the United States, and Sri Lanka. So how did I manage to squeeze all of this travel in a year? For starters, I work for myself. I am a freelance photographer and female travel and lifestyle blogger. 

In other words, I’m a social media influencer.

I started to get paid partnerships on Instagram in mid-2017, which happened on not-so-glamorous terms…

Around my one-year mark at a marketing agency, I was up for a promotion. During my promotion meeting, I declined the offer. I wasn’t ready to take on more work for such little pay. I was longing for freedom and more autonomy in my life. 

Maybe walking into that meeting with a fiery attitude wasn’t the best idea at the time, but I did. And it resulted in me getting fired. Wa wa waaaaaaa.

Anyhow, I probably don’t need to say this but being fired sucks. I felt stuck, stupid, worthless, and straight-up sad. But I got to work. I started pouring my heart and soul into Dani The Explorer. It took a TON of trial and error, but I finally started to get enough work to support myself. 

The shift came when I learned how to successfully speak to brands and convey exactly how I wanted to work with them in a paid Instagram sponsorship capacity.

Where I Am Today

As of today, I have landed 6-figures in brand deals with companies like Mazda, Adobe, Travel & Leisure, American Express, Marriott, and multiple travel and tourism companies. I have also successfully coached micro-influencers and nano-influencers on making money on Instagram with a small following.

The best part about my job is that I can travel where I want when I want. For example, in 2019, I lived out of a self-converted campervan with my partner. Even with the crazy years 2020 and 2021 were, I could still take a month off from work and live out of cabins on the East Coast of the USA. Life is good, and I’m hella grateful.

IG Sponsorship Guide – My Intention with This Post

Simple. I am a sucker for transparency. When I first started my influencer journey, the hardest thing I experienced was finding ACCURATE information online. I can’t tell you how many free products I took or how many times I undercharged my paid Instagram sponsorships because of something I read from a social media marketer who was never actually an influencer themselves.

And here is why you should care: regardless of whether or not you see yourself becoming a full-time influencer, the fact that you have the opportunity to monetize an Instagram page in the first place is huge!

In other words: you do not have to be a full-time influencer like me to score paid sponsorships on Instagram! This can be a side hustle as well.

Imagine what you’d be able to do with the extra money you earn just from posting about your favorite products on Instagram! That money can help you travel more, pay off debt, buy a home, save a little extra, get yourself a spa day – the opportunities are endless! Should you choose to do this full-time, you’ll be your boss!

Instagram Sponsorship for Small Accounts – Those Exist?

Before we jump into the good stuff, I want to call out something essential: Nano and Micro-Influencers, YOU NEED TO GET PAID FOR YOUR WORK. 

There, I said it. When I was fired from my marketing agency job, I had around 10,000 followers on Dani The Explorer. That’s when I landed my first brand deal, but truthfully, I regret waiting that long to start asking brands for money.

I defined myself by my following, and I thought I could never get paid as a content creator. WRONG. Micro and nano-influencers are so valuable. You deserve to get compensated for your work, and you CAN. Heck, one of my students landed a four-figure brand deal with under 5,000 followers.

If you’re a small creator, I suggest following the suggestions in this post and checking out my other blog on the different ways to make money as a content creator. Brand deals aren’t the only way to earn; they’re just the most popular and a starting point!

The Terminology for Paid Instagram Sponsorships 

Before we get into how to get paid IG sponsorships, let’s go over the terminology of sponsorships!

What is a Social Media Influencer?

An influencer is someone with a large following on their social media channels that is sometimes paid by a company to advertise and promote specific products on the influencer’s social feeds (aka a sponsored post). In other words, influencers get Instagram sponsorships.

What is a Sponsored Post?

A sponsored post is made on your social media channels (for this purpose, Instagram) in exchange for compensation. The compensation can be in the form of a free product or money. Sponsored posts must include “#sponsored” or “#ad” in the caption to comply with FTC regulations.

So why do brands even bother hiring influencers? Let’s talk about that!

Brands Can Target the Audience They Want

Now more than ever, companies are starting to allocate more marketing budgets to social media advertisements. Influencer marketing is now a billion-dollar industry. Why? If a company wants to get in front of a specific demographic, they can do it in a single influencer social post. Companies can get as niche as they want! Their products can also gain exposure to different locations. 

In addition, companies can work with influencers worldwide and have their products featured in marketing material that they may otherwise have to pay a production team to create in small increments.

Brands Benefit from Long Term Relationships

If a brand chooses to give an influencer an Instagram sponsorship long-term, now they’re able to grow with that influencer. So, for example, if in the first month of advertising, the influencer had 10,000 followers, and two months later the influencer had 30,000, now that brand is getting exposure to 20,000 more followers than they initially thought they were getting.

Not to mention, the influencer’s audience will warm up to the brand from seeing its products multiple times throughout the partnership. This makes followers more likely to make a purchase in the future.

Once I became a pro on getting paid IG sponsorships, I began offering image licensing, commercial photos, blogs, and more. Social media officially funds my travels and lifestyle. It can do the same for you!

Don’t worry; you don’t have to do ALL that right now. Brand deals (AKA sponsorships) are a great starting point for new creators!

Since Instagram is where I retain most of my social traffic, that is the social media channel I will highlight and speak to the most. However, some of these takeaways can also apply to monetize other social media channels. Let’s begin!

Here are the quick steps on how to get paid brand deals on Instagram:

  1. Have a defined brand and niche
  2. Have an audience who cares
  3. Create content consistently
  4. Find brands to contact
  5. Pitch brands

The Must-Haves to Get a Paid Instagram Sponsorship

Before you send out any sort of pitch to land your first paid brand deal, you need to do some prep work!

Your Mindset: Be Ready to Work

This blog will cover the basics of pitching brands for paid sponsorships. Yes, that means WE will be reaching out. 

I know that sounds scary, but the truth is that when you’re starting out in the influencer space, most big-name brands aren’t going to know who you are. 

Pitching is one of the fastest, tried, and true ways to obtain paid brand deals with a small following or a large one.

Being a freelancer is not easy, and brands will not always come out of the blue to give you an Instagram sponsorship. So you must meet them halfway.

Be ready to show up and get out of your comfort zone! And no, you will not be pitching forever, I promise. This is simply a starting point. 

You’d be surprised by how many new influencers aren’t willing to put the work in to attract brand deals and dream clients. That means more clients for you when you pitch!

Know Your Worth

This blog is all about how to get a paid Instagram sponsorship. Getting paid means you need to set a price for your content

You can get paid $10 per thousand Instagram followers as a rule of thumb. 

If you have 10,000 followers, for example, you can get paid about $100 per sponsored Instagram post (10,000/1,000 = 10, 10 x $10 = $100). 

Please note that the final number you choose to charge should also consider your engagement. That is just as important. 

Also… THIS IS THE VERY MINIMUM YOU SHOULD ASK FOR. 

Truthfully, $100 for a sponsored post is on the low end, and there are multiple factors to consider with pricing.

Contacting Brands for Paid IG Opportunities

Now that you have your media kit and know your rates, it’s time to figure out what brands we want to work with. Here are the steps I would take to find brand contacts and get a paid Instagram sponsorship.

Your Mindset: Stay Hopeful & Be Patient

We’re just about ready to start pitching, but first, I want you to get a couple of mindset things in check and be prepared for the long haul. 

Brands get influencer requests all the time. However, if you’re good at what you do, you stay true to your brand, and you bust your ass working on this, you’re going to get a “yes” somewhere. 

About 80% of my job was pitching brands when I first started. I spent a ton of time finding emails, creating proposals, and contacting folks. Pitching doesn’t always work, but I’m happy with the times it does! While you might get a “no” 3 times, it’s the 4th brand you contact that might give you a “yes.”

Make a List of IG Sponsorships You Want

First, take some time to think about what brands you would like to work with. As with any goal, we want to start by writing it down, so making an exhaustive list is most helpful. 

To take things a step forward and help you visualize a bit, I suggest you think about what a paid partnership with these brands might look like. Then, you can feel as big or as small as you’d like! This is your chance to dream a little. You can write down these as well!

Narrow Down Your Brand Sponsorship Options

Now look at your list and think about what brands you can work with today. In other words, if XYZ brand said, “We’re looking for influencers for our next campaign,” would they hire you? Be honest with yourself. Here are a few questions to ask beforehand:

  • Does this brand work with influencers at all? When was the last time they worked with influencers?
  • How big or small are the influencers they work with? Do they work with micro-influencers or macro-influencers?
  • Does my personal brand match what this company would be looking for in an influencer?

It’s essential to do your research and be diligent about where you would fit into a potential influencer campaign. Just because you have a profile and know how to take pictures doesn’t mean brands are entitled to offer you a brand deal.

I see way too many new influencers make the mistake of pitching every dream brand under the sun and moon when there are plenty of name brands who DON’T work with influencers. This is not to say that you can’t dream or you cannot work with a specific company in the future, but we’re working on where you stand today and how you can start getting paid now. 

Find the Right Contact for Brand Deals

So you have your list of brands you want to work with and have officially narrowed it down to which companies you believe you’ll be able to work with today (based on your current circumstances). So how do you find brands to contact for paid sponsorships? There are quite a few ways to go about this, but one of the most common is to go through an influencer agency.

Aspire IQ, Mavrck, and Whalar are a few more popular ones. Basically, how these agencies operate is you create an account with them, and upon approval, you will be able to apply for influencer job postings. 

Influencer agencies are an excellent option for small creators who are just starting out! My only flag here is to make sure that the jobs you apply for offer payment. Some of them tend to be product exchanges which we don’t want!

Either way, going through an agency is an easy way to work smarter, not harder. 

When I want to get an Instagram sponsorship for travel, I start by messaging the brand of interest on Instagram or Facebook. Plenty of brand partnerships I’ve had has started as DMs! 

Pitching Brands for Paid IG Sponsorships

Now that we’ve done all of our homework, it’s time to start pitching. Pitching is by far the scariest part of figuring out how to get paid partnerships on Instagram. So let’s get into successful pitching and what that looks like.

Successful Pitch Basics

“What makes a pitch successful?” My answer: keeping the pitch short and sweet. When you want to get a paid Instagram sponsorship, a long dissertation on why the brand should hire you won’t do the trick.

At the bare minimum, your pitch should include information about who you are and what you want (aka why you are emailing). In a perfect world, you’ll be able to illustrate the personal connection you have to the company you’re emailing. Being able to describe your “why” behind your email concisely can ultimately convey the story you’ll be telling with their products or services.

Ask for Money

Okay, so now we understand what should go in our pitch, right? Almost. One key element here is that you will have to emphasize that you’re reaching out for a paid opportunity. 

It’s easy to accept free gear and items, but what about asking for money? My advice is to just go for it. The worst thing a brand can say is “no.” And at that point, oh well. No one ever got anywhere by quivering at “no.” 

Make Your Pitch Personal

As you craft your pitch email, constantly personalize it. This is ESPECIALLY true if you’re asking for the big bucks! If brands get the impression that you’re sending them a blanket email, they’re less likely to throw you a bone. Personalize it, and you will get an Instagram sponsorship.

Your Successful Pitch Checklist 

Here’s a short list of what goes into a brand pitch email:

  • Who you are
  • Your social media handles
  • Why you’re reaching out
  • Connection to the brand
  • What do you want out of this 

You’ll notice that I didn’t include a media kit in this list. That’s because I sometimes reserve my Instagram influencer media kit to follow up with a brand. However, there is no right or wrong way to send the initial pitch email. So you can also include your media kit if you’d like to!

Pitching Through Influencer Agencies

Please note that if you’re going through an influencer agency, you sometimes have the option to send the brand a personalized note. So that is where you would place your pitch in that instance! Doing so can increase your chances of getting the job.

Seal the Deal & Close the Pitch

Next, we close. I have finished pitching companies, and I finally got a reply! So what the heck do I do now? How do I complete the pitch and get that Instagram sponsorship?

Your Mindset: Stay Calm

This is what you have been waiting for! When a brand initially replies that they are interested, that’s your time to shine and explain what you want to do for them. I also suggest getting on a phone call to talk through your vision.

Ask for Money… Again!

Whether or not you have a phone call, you need to clarify what you charge. Ask the brand you’re speaking with if they allocate a budget to Instagram sponsorships and what that budget is. 

Knowing how to get a paid Instagram sponsorship means you need to stick true to your worth and understand it. 

Expect a few negotiation emails to come to a price that works for both of you!

Sign a Contract

Always sign a contract. You never want to get an Instagram​ sponsorship without one! Brands typically have a sample contract they use for freelance work, so make sure you ask them to put one together for you! An arrangement will help protect you from fraud and ensure you get paid!

What Do You Do When a Brand Contacts You on Instagram or Email?

Like I said earlier, you won’t always be pitching brands. But, as you get more experience and grow, you’ll begin to have brands reach out to you. Therefore, if you want to learn how to get a paid Instagram sponsorship and make money for content creation, you need to know how to respond to pitches, too!

Start By Reading Their Email Carefully

Understand exactly what the brand wants and what the partnership entails. 

Ask Questions

Do not be afraid to ask questions! If the brand makes no monetary compensation, ask them if they have a budget. Attach your influencer media kit to the email and let the brand know you have attached it for their review.

Be sure to ask questions on anything that confuses you about the offer. Asking questions is by far the most crucial element to responding to brand pitches because doing so unravels details that may not have been expressed in the initial email.

Know Your Worth and Stick to It

I have run into many situations where a brand tried to undercut my rates by over 50%. I kindly let them know that my rates are firm, and I would love to make it work, but we can try again later if they do not have the budget to match my rates today. Do not be afraid to negotiate! This is your Instagram sponsorship!

Don’t Be Afraid to Say “No.”

See above! Also, don’t be afraid to say no to a collaboration you’re genuinely not passionate about. More jobs will come, I promise.

Always Sign a Contract

Never agree to any job without a contract.

“How Many Followers Do I Need to Get Sponsored on Instagram?”

The answer? IT DOESN’T MATTER. Start monetizing your social media channels now! This is one of my biggest regrets with my influencer business.

I wish I had started asking for money sooner rather than later. Some brands like to work with prominent creators, but there are plenty of ways to make money from brands and even more ways to pitch these ideas. BTW, there are strategies for how to gain Instagram followers organically in case you want growth to be a priority!

“I Don’t Travel Much – Do I Have to Travel to Make Money on Instagram?”

Definitely not. I use travel as an example of getting a paid Instagram sponsorship because that is the brand I created for myself. Paid partnerships on Instagram can vary from industry to industry. 

Many folks also use these same techniques to obtain partnerships with clothing companies.

“A Brand Has Offered Me a Free Product Instead of Payment, Should I Take It?”

That’s up to you. However, the next time a brand offers you a free product, consider how easy you’re letting them get off. Please do not confuse this as saying you should never do free work! If this is your first rodeo, yes, do it for free and get some experience under your belt. You should start charging once you’ve successfully completed at least 3-5 jobs.

​Most brands have a huge marketing budget (at least most do), and creating content is hard work. The second you agree to a free product, you’re agreeing to work as a free marketer for a brand, and all you got was a material item that you probably won’t have in a year. I think you should help set the standards for brands and ask for payment for the long term! Just think, would you ever work your current job if all you got was free stationery?

“I’m An Ambassador for a Brand, and I Don’t Get Paid. What Should I do?”

Ambassadorships can sometimes make it easier to get an Instagram sponsorship! But, of course, you can always do work for free for a brand you love, and after a certain amount of time, start the discussion of how you can get paid and what that would look like. 

“Exactly How Much Money Should I Be Asking For?”

That is entirely up to you and the project at hand. Was doing 3 Instagram posts for a total of $50 worth your effort? What quality of work and what results are you getting? Landing Paid Brand Deals – My Final Thoughts

Earning money as an influencer isn’t easy. Pitching brands isn’t easy, and landing paid Instagram sponsorships isn’t easy. But, there are hundreds of influencers in this space, and there is room for you. You can make a living doing this too!

Don’t ever let anyone tell you becoming an influencer isn’t a real job or the industry is too saturated. That simply isn’t true.

    I’ve said this here many times before, for the stock market to be in a real bubble, at these interest rates, the P/E ratio would have to get up to 50x or some such.  Unfortunately, we have gotten to that point that rethinking our old ways of investing money is the way out of this current recession. Who knows, this might even take longer than we expected.
